Frequently asked questions
We want your visit to the WORD Lab to be as pleasant as possible. Do not hesitate to ask us questions while you are here.
what are your experiments like?
Our experiments are designed to be fun and interesting for your child. Typically, they are designed to be like a game. For example, your child may be asked to pick several objects out of an array. Or look at pictures. Most children find our studies quite fun. We generally keep them fairly short so that they work within young children's attention spans. We also make all of our tasks simple so that children do not need to talk -- only look, touch or point.
how do you get results from this?
At the end of the experiment we will be able to look at how your child generally behaved. For example, if your child looks at objects from one category more than objects from another category we can tell that your child can distinguish between the two categories.
how long does the study take?
Each study typically lasts 15 minutes or less. However during your visit will be describe the procedure in detail and ask you to complete a vocabulary checklist and brief questionnaire. The entire visit should last between 30 and 45 minutes.
when are appointments scheduled?
We schedule at your convenience Monday through Saturday between 09.00 and 18.30.
how many times do we visit the lab?
For each study you and your child will visit the laboratory once. However, many families enjoy participating in studies and participate in more than one study, typically, a couple of months apart.
will I be with my child the whole time?
Absolutely. You will remain with your child during the entire visit.
may I bring additional children?
Yes! We have a play area next to the testing area and another adult from the laboratory will wait with your child there. Other arrangements can be arranged in some cases.
may I bring my partner?
Yes, both parents are welcome to come together for the laboratory visit, but only one of you must come.
will my child's information be shared with anyone?
Absolutely not. We will not share your child's personal information with anyone, including other members of the department and university. All data is also kept locked and each child's data is assigned a code number that has nothing to do with his/her personal information.
what do I get for participating?
You will be able to park for free or reimbursed for taking the train or bus. Your child will receive a small gift, for example, a storybook.
will it cost me anything to participate?
No. You will be able to park for free or reimbursed for taking the train or bus. Your child will receive a small gift, for example, a storybook.
what if I change my mind?
You may cancel your appointment or stop the experiment at any time.
will I find out the results of the study?
Yes. We will send you a newsletter when the study is completed. You may also be invited to a presentation by a member of the laboratory.
