The AUR has now been succeeded by the Ultrabat, a custom-built ultrasound monitoring device that records data directly onto a hard disk. Once the ultrabat has been triggered by a bat call, or other ultrasound, it records for a preset period of either 3 or 10 seconds. The record is stored in a file, and the creation time and date of the file indicate when the recording was made.
The Ultrabat has several advantages over the AUR:
- It does not incorporate a tape recorder or bat detector
- Able to record much more data
- Much shorter intervals between recorded windows, giving almost continuous recording capability
Like the AUR, the Ultrabat produces high quality recordings that are suitable for quantative analysis using BatSound (Pettersson Elektronic, AB). This is particularly useful for recording relatively infrequent social calls, which can then be used as model calls for the Autobat system.
The Ultrabat system has been developed for our own research use and is not available to purchase.
