The Commission on Maps and Graphics for Blind and
Visually Impaired People (part of the International Cartographic Association)
maintains a web site with details of recent and current research into
tactile maps and other tactile graphics. They also send out a newsletter
to people who register at their site. The newsletter is offered as a
forum for discussion about tactile graphics, and is a good way to find
out about conferences that may be of interest, jobs in the area of tactile
graphics, and so on.
NCTD: National Centre for Tactile Diagrams
http://www.nctd.org.uk
The National Centre for Tactile Diagrams (NCTD) was
set up in 1999 to provide practical assistance and guidance in the production
and use of tactile graphics, as well as trying to improve standards
through research. The NCTD runs a variety of training workshops and
a series of national conferences on tactile diagrams. They are currently
compiling a national database of existing tactile diagrams available
from diverse sources, with the aim of making these more widely available.

Dr. John Gill of the RNIB's Scientific Research Unit
maintains a web based information source for people working in the field
of visual disabilities. The site includes a register of researchers
in the area which can be searched by researcher's name or by subject.
The section headed 'Tactile Graphics' includes about 25 researchers
around the world (with an outline of their research and links to their
home pages where available) and is a good way to get an impression of
what is going on currently.
