Research Interests

Lesley Fallowfield trained at Guy's Hospital London as a nurse before completing a BSc in Experimental Psychology. Research for her PhD was done at the Universities of Sussex and Cambridge.

Professor Fallowfield is keen to promote better communication skills for health care professionals. Her expertise in this particularly important area was recognised by Cancer Research UK who have provided research funding for the past 15 years for her team to evaluate innovative training courses for healthcare professionals working in oncology.

These courses are now being run throughout the UK as part of the Department of Health's Cancer Plan (2000).

For some years Professor Fallowfield has been conducting extensive research into the psychosocial effects of treatment for breast cancer, and is well-known for her work measuring quality of life in patients with cancer. She has contributed numerous articles to medical journals and has written three textbooks on quality of life and communication in health care.
